Senior In Home Care: How Seniors Can Protect Their Skin

Summer is just around the corner and that means a lot of seniors are already preparing to spend more time outside.

FORT MYERS, FL, UNTIED STATES, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — ++

Summer is just around the corner and that means a lot of seniors are already preparing to spend more time outside. Needless to say, that’s definitely a good thing, however, there are some risks involved as well. If you have a senior family member in Fort Myers, FL you’re probably fully aware of how hot summers are in this region. In order to make sure that your loved one can safely enjoy the sun, senior in-home care experts recommend the following tips:

Proper Cleansing

Everyone sweats more in the summer and elders are no exception. As a result, it is important to make sure that seniors use mild skin cleansers to help out with this problem. There are many different types of cleansers available so take good care to pick one that’s right for your elders, particularly if they suffer from a skin condition.

Sunscreen is a Must

According to senior in-home care specialists, seniors should use sunscreen on a daily basis during the summer months. That’s good advice for everyone but it’s especially important for the elderly. Older skin has a much tougher time recovering from prolonged sun exposure so make sure your loved ones don’t go outside without sunscreen.

Keep Hydrated

Once the heat waves start rolling in, it’s going to be more important than ever to drink plenty of water. As a general rule of thumb, senior in-home care professionals recommend drinking between 6-8 glasses of water per day in order to stay properly hydrated.

Avoid Going Outside during Peak Hours

Sun radiation is most dangerous between 10 AM and 4 PM so make sure your seniors stay inside during those times. Doing so will significantly reduce the risk of developing harmful skin conditions. Instead, spending time outside in the morning and evening is the best way to enjoy the hot summer sun.

Adhere to these tips and your senior loved one is going to have no skin issues this summer!

New Study Finds Main Ingredient in Roundup® Linked to Liver Disease

Schmidt National Law Group

First-of-its-kind study finds association between glyphosate and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in humans

There have been a handful of studies … where animals either were or weren’t fed Roundup or glyphosate directly, and they all point to the same thing: the development of liver pathology.”

— Dr. Paul J. Mills

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., USA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — In a first-of-its kind study out of the University of California, San Diego, researchers find glyphosate—the main ingredient in the popular weedkiller Roundup—is associated with fatty liver disease in humans. Past research has shown the powerful chemical is linked to liver disease in animal studies, but this study is the first to find a link in humans.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology in April 2019, was conducted by researchers in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health at UCSD’s School of Medicine. The team examined glyphosate in the urine samples of two different groups of patients, those with a diagnosis of a certain type of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and those without. Their results were significant, says an article published by UCSD, and showed that regardless of a patient’s age, race, ethnicity, body mass index, or diabetes status, glyphosate residue was significantly higher in those with fatty liver disease than those with healthier livers.

Lead researcher Dr. Paul J. Mills, professor and chief in the Department of Family Medicine, says this study coupled with previous animal studies suggest a link between the use of commercial glyphosate in our food supply and the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, according to the article.

Roundup has been used by farmers around the world to kill weeds without harming their crops, which are genetically modified to withstand the effects of glyphosate. Roundup has been used by home gardeners since the 1970s, but its use grew significantly in the late 1990s after Roundup Ready seeds were introduced to the market.

Since 1996, America’s farmers have been spraying their fields with glyphosate and its use has been steadily increasing. The prevalence of fatty liver disease has also been on the rise in the last two decades, says Mills.

“There have been a handful of studies, all of which we cited in our paper, where animals either were or weren’t fed Roundup or glyphosate directly, and they all point to the same thing: the development of liver pathology,” Mills told UCSD. “So I naturally thought: ‘Well, could it be exposure to this same herbicide that is driving liver disease in the U.S.?’”

Mills is now reportedly planning to study patients eating an all-organic diet to see how an herbicide-free diet impacts biomarkers of liver disease.

Glyphosate is the most widely used herbicide in the United States, and studies have found it lingering in our food supply even after the crops have been harvested and processed. Glyphosate has been found in beloved breakfast cereals like Cheerios, as well as in our water supplies.

In addition to liver disease, Roundup has also been linked to certain cancers, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. There are now thousands of lawsuits pending in courts across the US accusing Roundup manufacturer Monsanto and its new parent company Bayer of failing to warn about the risks of glyphosate. Several of those lawsuits have already gone to trial, with juries handing down multi-million and billion-dollar verdicts against Bayer and Monsanto.

We’ve helped 1,800 Roundup claimants and counting in their fight against Bayer and Monsanto, including co-counsel relations with leading law firms. Contact us today to learn how Schmidt National Law Group can help you.

Pathways Bioscience Announces Peer-Reviewed Publication of Work Utilizing Nrf2-Activation Effects of PB123

Supplementing HIV-1 transgenic rats with Pathways Nrf2 activator PB123 restored Nrf2 functionality

AURORA, CO, USA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Pathways Bioscience LLC, a biomedical sciences company focused on discovering and developing small molecule drugs and dietary supplements that act on gene transcription pathways, and the provider of the Nrf2 activating dietary supplements PB123 and PB125® announces the recent peer-reviewed publication of a scientific paper entitled “MiR-144 Mediates Nrf2 Inhibition and Alveolar Epithelial Dysfunction in HIV-1 Transgenic Rats” in the American Journal of Physiology-Cell Physiology.

“This publication describes a collaborative study carried out in Dr. David Guidot’s laboratory at Emory University. HIV infection can still increase lung vulnerability, even in individuals on anti-retroviral therapy, by a mechanism that impairs the Nrf2 pathway. Supplementing HIV-1 transgenic rats with the Pathways Bioscience Nrf2 activator PB123 restored Nrf2 functionality, antioxidant enzyme expression and lung epithelial barrier function,” noted Dr. Joe McCord, the scientific leader and co-founder of Pathways Bioscience.

“The discovery of drug and dietary means to activate Nrf2 has grown in interest around the world do to anticipated benefits for health, wellness, and aging,” said Dr. Brooks Hybertson, President/CEO and co-founder of Pathways Bioscience. “Nrf2 functionality can get inhibited by a variety of factors related to aging and illness,” he continued, “so we are interested in new ways to support the Nrf2 pathway. We developed our PB123 dietary supplement based on how well its ingredients worked together to activate the Nrf2 transcription factor. We were honored to have an opportunity to contribute to this new publication by Drs. Fan, Kukoyi, and Staitieh in Dr. David Guidot’s laboratory.”

Notably, this publication describes two approaches. Both treatment with an antagomir that silences miR-144 and dietary supplementation with PB123 restored the Nrf2 pathway and barrier functionality of alveolar epithelial cells from HIV-1 transgenic rats. The Nrf2 transcription factor has been called the “master regulator” of cellular antioxidant, detoxification, and cell defense gene expression. This newly published work helps scientists get a better understanding of potential Nrf2-inhibitory effects of miR-144, and how this be overcome with targeted inhibitors of miR-144 or with Nrf2-activating dietary supplements, with the goal of developing new approaches to supporting lung health.

About Pathways Bioscience
Pathways Bioscience LLC is a biomedical sciences company focused on discovering and developing new agents, both small molecule drugs and dietary supplements, that influence gene expression pathways and exert beneficial effects, with particular emphasis on the Nuclear Factor, Erythroid 2 Like 2 (NFE2L2, or Nrf2) gene transcription factor, known as the master regulator of cell protection mechanisms. These activities are based on the concept that the best way to improve healthspan and overcome the health and wellness problems associated with aging is to support the body’s own defense mechanisms that allow it to normalize, protect, and heal itself. The company's headquarters are in Aurora, Colorado. Pathways Bioscience has developed the PB123 and PB125 dietary supplement formulations using Nrf2.0® Technology. PB123 is currently available in Latin America through a partnership with Activz LLC in their GNM-X product, and PB125 is currently available in the US directly from Pathways Bioscience on the Company’s Website at www.pathwaysbio.com.

The Daily Northwestern: Patients Long Claiming Harm from Heart Surgeries have New Evidence under Nuremberg Laws

Northwestern Memorial also could not offer her an explanation”

— The Daily Northwestern, Amy Li 5-23-2019

EVANSTON, ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, May 24, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Patients who received an experimental heart valve without their consent have renewed hope that the hospital and surgeon will be held accountable, according to an article published Thursday in The Daily Northwestern.

The newspaper cited documents recently obtained recently under a Freedom of Information Act request to confirm Northwestern University’s chief cardiac surgeon didn’t have the university or patient approval to implant a heart valve ring he invented during open heart surgery.

Among the documented issues with the heart valve ring, implanted in 667 patients in 2006-07:

• The device was not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but should have required that approval.
• The experimental device, invented and patented by Northwestern’s Dr. Patrick McCarthy, was implanted without patients’ consent.
• The surgeon continued implanting his invention and studying outcomes even after he told Northwestern’s ethics board that he had terminated the study.
• The surgeon later published selected results in the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons Journal. He omitted several adverse outcomes from the journal article.
• The 667 patients who received the valve ring before it was recalled never have been told of the recall or of the associated risks, even though several patients have had issues ranging from heart attacks to death, as written in a letter by the FDA to Sen. Charles Grassley, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee.

The case has been investigated by the US Senate Finance Committee, Sen. Charles Grassley, the House Government Oversight Committee, Congressman Glenn Grothman, Congressman Danny Davis of IL, and The US Senate Committee on Homeland Security, Sen. Ron Johnson.

In the past, it was largely dismissed as a series of innocent mistakes. Documents obtained under the FOIA request, however, paint a darker picture – one of fraudulent concealment of evidence and human experimentation without consent.

One of the patients, Maureen Obermeier, has filed a 1401 petition to ask for a new trial in Obermeier versus Northwestern etc 08-L-012426 in Cook County Circuit Court.

An excerpt from The Daily Northwestern article:

The outcome of the new lawsuit is still to be determined, but Obermeier said she is hopeful that the FOIA documents are a turning point that will finally “end the cycle of horrible behavior.”

But even if the lawsuit is settled in her favor, Obermeier has to deal with the ramifications of her 2006 surgery for the rest of her life. She will continue to rely on a number of medications and have to live a restricted lifestyle.

“My life is completely different now,” Obermeier said. “My cardiologist told me, ‘You’re alive probably only because you’ve worked so hard at staying alive.’”

One of the nation’s most respected college newspapers, The Daily Northwestern has won dozens of national and regional awards. The Daily has won the Pacemaker — long regarded as the Pulitzer Prize of college journalism — nine times since 2000.

Dr. Nalini Rajamannan, a former cardiologist at Northwestern, praised The Daily Northwestern for its journalistic investigation into the decade-plus-old case.

She encouraged the 667 patients, lawmakers, regulators, reporters and patients’ rights advocates to read the FOIA documents themselves to decide whether they believe patients’ rights were protected.

“The response should be immediate under the federal laws which protect US citizens,” Rajamannan said. “These patients should be informed of their unknowing participation in the prospective clinical trial. They should receive a full review of their medical history and receive proper medical care moving forward.”
