Province Covers New Cystic Fibrosis Drug

CANADA, August 4 - People in Saskatchewan living with cystic fibrosis (CF) are now eligible for Alyftrek, a medication that improves lung function.

As of August 1^st, coverage of Alyftrek is now available to CF patients ages six and older who meet the medical criteria. The drug is effective for patients who have one of 266 different rare genetic mutations causing CF.

“Our government is pleased to cover the cost of this new treatment for Saskatchewan patients with cystic fibrosis,” Health Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. “Alyftrek has been shown to improve quality of life in patients with CF, so expanding coverage puts CF patients first by helping them to lead healthier lives.”

Although there is no cure for CF, Alyftrek controls symptoms and slows the rate the disease progresses.

Saskatchewan’s coverage of Alyftrek follows Health Canada’s authorization of the medication for sale in Canada and the successful completion of pricing negotiations through the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance in July 2026. Effective August 1, Alyftrek is listed on the Saskatchewan Formulary for eligible patients.

Saskatchewan also provides coverage for other CF medications that treat specific genetic forms of the disease, including Trikafta, Orkambi and Kalydeco. The additional listing of Alyftrek expands access to effective CF treatment, making more than 95 per cent of eligible patients in Saskatchewan candidates for the therapy.

Patients with CF or parents/guardians of children with CF who think they may benefit from therapy with Alyftrek are encouraged to speak with their physician.

CF is a genetic disease that damages the lungs and digestive system. According to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Registry, there are more than 4,500 CF patients in Canada and almost 150 patients in Saskatchewan.
