MEASLES IN NEIGHBORING COUNTIES
Recently, Allegheny, Tioga, and Steuben Counties have reported positive measles cases. With this in mind, the Chemung County Health Department would like to share the following information:
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close contact.
- Please check your immunity status. You are considered immune if you were born before 1957, you have a documented history of 2 doses of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine, or a health care provider has verified immunity by a blood test. (Immunity means your chances of getting measles are very low).
The best way to check your vaccination status is to contact your doctor.
- Be on the lookout for measles symptoms:
Early symptoms: high fever of greater than 101 degrees F, cough, runny nose, red, watery eyes.
Later symptoms: a red, blotchy rash that starts on the face and spreads downward.
- If you believe you have measles, it is important to do the following:
Call your healthcare provider before you arrive for treatment.
Measles is very contagious; it is important that healthcare personnel can plan for your visit to limit the spread of illness to others.
- Getting measles does not feel good for anyone, and measles can be very dangerous for kids under 5 years old, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.
