Alexander: Working to Address Affordability

These days, many constituents reach out to me to discuss affordability. Healthcare is too expensive. Homeownership is becoming a dream. Childcare is cost prohibitive. These issues, along with high property taxes and assessments, are causing real economic hardship for hard-working Hoosiers. No matter how hard they try, they just can’t get ahead or even save for an unexpected expense.

I get it.

As a real estate professional, I see firsthand how the high price of homes – along with the accompanying property taxes and insurance – are prohibiting thousands of Hoosiers from living the American dream. High costs are keeping them from purchasing their first home or causing them to struggle to pay their mortgage and property taxes.

That’s why I’m working with my Senate colleagues to make housing more affordable and property taxes lower. We recently passed legislation providing billions of dollars in tax relief – both income and property taxes. Indiana’s income tax is now one of the lowest in the country, but Hoosiers are still feeling the pinch. We need to do more. We need to ensure that Hoosiers are not forced out of homes they own free and clear because they cannot afford skyrocketing property tax bills.

I’ve joined my colleagues to pass legislation making healthcare costs more transparent, to lower prescription costs and to protect Hoosiers from hidden fees and excessive hospital bills.

I have also addressed childcare concerns by supporting legislation that allows employers to offer childcare as a benefit, allowing Hoosiers to go to work and have convenient, affordable childcare.
