General Leonard Wood Community Hospital Welcomes New Commander and Director

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — General Leonard Wood Community Hospital conducted a change of command ceremony Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, marking a new chapter in operational medical readiness and compassionate care for the installation.

During the ceremony, Col. Angela R. Diebal-Lee relinquished command and directorship of GLWCH to Col. Maureen Giorio. Brig. Gen. Jonathan Taylor, acting commanding general for Medical Readiness Command, West, presided over the time-honored event.

Diebal-Lee reflected on her tenure at GLWCH, commending the hospital workforce for modernizing healthcare delivery and advancing patient safety. “What an absolute honor and blessing it has been to witness first-hand the amazing things you all have accomplished,” said Diebal-Lee. “Protect the force, protect your family—you have lived that standard every day.”

Diebal-Lee commanded GLWCH since 2024. Under her direction, the military treatment facility seamlessly transitioned operations into the state-of-the-art replacement hospital and reinforced regional access through an expanded Department of Veterans Affairs Sharing Agreement .

Giorio arrived at Fort Leonard Wood from the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command at Ft. Detrick, Md. Bringing seasoned leadership in military clinical medicine and healthcare administration, Giorio will direct the operational medical readiness of service members across the installation while delivering world-class healthcare to active-duty service members, retirees, and beneficiary families across Missouri and surrounding communities.

“I am honored to join the GLWCH team and the vibrant Fort Leonard Wood community,” said Giorio. “Our steadfast priority remains the health, lethality, and total wellness of our service members, trainees, permanent party personnel and their families. We will strengthen our clinical workforce, uphold peak medical readiness and collaborate with regional healthcare partners to ensure exceptional, timely care for every beneficiary.”

GLWCH remains vital to the installation's mission, directly sustaining the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence training environment and working side by side with Veteran Affairs and the civilian health network to safeguard warfighter readiness and comprehensive beneficiary health, according to Giorio.

The change of command ceremony represents the formal, seamless transfer of authority and accountability from one commanding officer to another, ensuring the medical unit and its personnel remain disciplined, ready, and unwavering in their mission.
